Is there a way to stop the pop up from coming up when I start to type in code in the program?
You can turn that off by going to Window -> Preferences -> isCOBOL -> Editor -> Content Assist.
You can also specify which type of content the content assist option includes.
For instance, you can choose to have the IDE only pop-up the names of paragraphs when you type PERFORM, or the names of files when you type OPEN or CLOSE.
If you disable this option, you can still get the Content Assist pop-ups by typing Control + the spacebar.
